Fireworks and teenagers

We've had some excitement at our house tonight. For those who have been to our house you know of the large field we have near us. Well tonight some teenagers thought it would be fun to set off some fireworks in the field. Mike the fireman at heart knew he better keep an eye out b/c of all the dry brush.

Well, I was upstairs folding laundry in our room (you see where this is going) and Mike came up to talk. He casually looked out the window and then I heard in a voice I had never heard from him...

"Hey - what are you doing? You better put that out!" Then he took off downstairs. I quickly went to the window and saw flames going above the rod iron fence and the kids running away. I ran after Mike and he was already on the phone with 911 and grabbing his shoes - I took the phone to talk to emergency dispatch and he took off running. By the time I got off the phone and got my shoes Mike had already reached the fire and was putting the fire out. The boys were with him and helping as well.

A minute or two later you could hear the sirens blaring and getting closer. The boys had a look of sheer panic on their faces. They told me it was out and the fire dept didn't need to come but I wanted them to. I wanted someone to put a fear into these kids so they wouldn't do it again. The girls were with me and could see the fire trucks approaching and were so excited.

Mike was still throwing water from a bucket onto the fire and kicking dirt onto it when the brave men in the big red truck pulled up. I told them what was going on and they said "so all those guys over there were involved?" I responded with "no just the guys in the blue shirts, my husband is the one with the green t-shirt and he is the one that got the fire out." Good thing Mike and I weren't in the middle of a fight or something - he could've gone down with the teenagers! LOL

Anyway, the girls were very excited to see the fire truck and I have to admit so was I. There really is something to be said about men in uniform. :) I told Mike he should become a fireman instead of an electrical engineer. He actually said he would like to do that but was already committed to school - so maybe in a couple of years!!

Sorry - I got side tracked on the uniform part. The police showed up too and they had a nice little talk with the kids and during that talk the mom of one of the kids showed up and then a dad! I felt a little sorry for them since I'm sure they just got a warning with the police but the parents are probably really mad!!

Anyway, we had some excitement tonight - half the people on our street came out to see why fire trucks where in the neighborhood. I did take this opportunity to talk to the girls about fire and fireworks and how dangerous they can be. C just kept on saying "Oh teenagers - what were they thinking?" I laughed and said they weren't thinking and that's the problem. She said she would never be that way when she is a teenager. I can only pray she remembers that!!

Wow! What excitement! I'm glad you called in the big guns, too. Kids need to learn that they can't just do whatever they want without effect or consequence. Good job!
